Hi John,

I, too, am a recent graduate from the program (August 2011). Overall,
I recommend it. Considering that it is not billed as a "training
program," the balance between theoretical discussion and gaining
practical knowledge is actually quite good. Obviously I don't know
what your background is, but having had some museum experience already
was helpful, as it gave me some background knowledge to focus my
studies. I believe the core classes are good ones, and there is more
than enough to choose from to round out your electives.

As with any degree program, I think the success depends as much (or
more) on your fellow students and your professors as it does on the
structure of the program. My personal experience - given not only my
work with certain professors, but the information I gleaned from other
students - is that some of the staff is more difficult to work with,
even to learn from. That said, these same professors were absolutely
lauded by other students, so I think it's more that you'll find
multiple kinds of personalities and teaching styles, which is really a
good thing when you get down to it. Ultimately, I think it's clear
that every professor here has a passion for museums and their career
choice.

As others have already noted, the Program Chair is a wonderful person,
and very responsive to anything you might need. In fact, I'm pretty
sure that if I emailed her with a relevant question even as an alum,
she would still help me out if she could! Again, another student
already mentioned the price tag, and it is a bit steep, but I felt
that no other program I had looked at (at the time) had all of the
qualities I was looking for like JHU did.

Hope that helps, and feel free to contact me off-list if you have more
questions!
