Designing museums seems to be a battle between the employees who
know what they need and architects, administrators and funders who want

a pretty building.

Amen!! We had constant battles for years, fighting for functional
design vs. what the architect wanted to give us. We've been in our new
building for almost a year, and we're still going through renovations to
make the space work (including enlarging a 10' loading dock door to 15',
because as built it was too small).

It's always cheaper to build it right once rather than having to
re-build an element that wasn't designed with how it will be used in
mind. We were able to win some battles in the design phase with this
argument--others, we're paying for now.
