We have published our entire collections database on the web since 1998.  
We believe that we are the first museum in the US to do so.  My motivation to 
do this was the existence of library databases on the web.  If we can go to 
most any library website and find out if they have a particular book, why not 
artifacts in museums?
We have not had any problems and nothing but compliments from researchers, 
students, borrowing institutions and descendents of donors.  Our own staff 
uses this quite often as well.
For security reasons, we do not publish storage locations, insurance values or 
contact information for donors.  For donors who wish to remain anonymous, 
we do not reveal their names.
