POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

DIRECTOR OF COLLECTIONS AT MOUNT VERNON
George Washington's Estate and Gardens

The Director of Collections provides leadership to a wide range of
programs and projects related to Mount Vernon's extensive collection of
furnishings, artifacts, books and manuscripts, and Washington Family
memorabilia.  As the executive in charge of interpretive exhibits in
both historic and museum settings, on and off the Mount Vernon estate,
the Director of Collections supervises research, ensures the highest
levels of care and conservation of historic materials, and formulates
policies for exhibitions and loans of objects.  Working with
professionals in the fields of education and marketing, the Director of
Collections is charged with sharing Mount Vernon's collections in an
effective and meaningful manner, with large segments of the public.  The
curatorial, research, library, and archival areas are managed by the
Director of Collections.  The incumbent also represents Mount Vernon at
conferences, lectures, fund-raising events, and other special programs.

The Director of Collections reports directly to the Resident Director
and serves as the staff liaison with the Collections Committee of the
Board.  The departments managed by the Director of Collections have
annual budgets in excess of $700,000 and a total of seven staff
positions.

Desired qualifications include an advanced degree in museum studies or
related field, and at least five years of experience in a professional
capacity at a museum or historic house, or similar institution.  Good
writing and speaking skills, experience in managing a staff, and a
knowledge of American history in the colonial period are preferred.
