Visitors to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation can visit the Public
Gaol (an original, 18th-century building) to learn about lawbreakers,
as well as the gaol keeper and his family.

The newly restored Courthouse is the site for interpretations of
how people in the eighteenth century conducted court business.  There
are also occasional evening programs entitled "Cry Witch" in which
visitors participate in a re-enactment of the trial of Grace
Sherwood, who was accused of witchcraft.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library contains significant
collections of primary and secondary source materials which support
research on eighteenth-century crime and punishment.  Open from 10:00-
5:00, Monday through Friday, the Library provides reference services
to all researchers with an interest in this and other colonial
Virginia historical research topics.
