At the annual conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America
(ARLIS/NA) held in San Antonio, Texas, April 4 through 10, 1997, the 18th
Annual George Wittenborn Book Awards were presented to these outstanding
publications:

LA PINTURA MURAL PREHISPANICA EN MEXICO: TEOTIHUACAN edited by Dr.
Beatriz de la Fuente, (Mexico: Cunidad Universitaria. D.R., Instituto de
Investigaciones Esteticas, 1996).

AMERICAN WINDSOR CHAIRS by Nancy Goyne Evans, (New York: Hudson Hills
Press in association with The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, 1996).

METALWORK IN EARLY AMERICA: COPPER AND ITS ALLOYS FROM THE WINTERTHUR
COLLECTION by Donald L. Fennimore, (Winterthur: The Henry Francis du Pont
Winterthur Museum, 1996).

A special award for outstanding reference publication was given to THE
DICTIONARY OF ART, Jane Turner, editor; Hugh Brigstocke, consulting
editor, (New York: Grove Dictionaries, Inc., 1996).

The Wittenborn Book Award, established by ARLIS/NA in 1981, honors the
memory of New York art book dealer and publisher George Wittenborn
(1905-1974) who was a strong supporter of ARLIS/NA in its formative
years.  The awards are given annually to outstanding North American art
publications which represent the highest standards in content, design and
construction.

Additionally, two publications received a Special Mention by the
committee this year:

ART AND ARTISTS OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY CHINA by Michael Sullivan,
(Berkeley: University of California Press, 1996).

THE PAINTED PHOTOGRAPH, 1839-1914: ORIGINS, TECHNIQUES, ASPIRATIONS by
Heinz K. Henisch and Bridget A. Henisch, (University Park, Pennsylvania:
The Pennsylvania State University Press, 1996).

Eighteenth Annual George Wittenborn Memorial Award Committee:

Cincinnati; Jane Dunwoodie, Dayton Art Institute; Christopher Hatten,
Huntington Museum of Art, Park Hills, WV; Judy Inwood, Cincinnati Public

Cincinnati Art Museum.
