NOTICE OF A TENURE-ELIGIBLE POSITION IN ARCHAEOLOGY

POSITION: Assistant Professor of Archaeology

BEGINNING DATE: Late August 1999

QUALIFICATIONS: Completed Ph.D. by beginning date in late August, 1999
required.  Teaching experience and substantial field experience acquired
through field research and/or CRM required.  Preference will be given to
candidates with a geographical focus on the Midwest.  Other regional and
topical specializations are open, but preference exists for candidates with
strength in one or more of the following:  geoarchaeology, environmental
archaeology, GIS, ethnicity, public archaeology.  Women and members of
minority groups are especially encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES: To teach archaeology (introductory, advanced, lab methods,
special topics, field school), history and theory of anthropology,
introduction to physical anthropology, and possibly introduction to cultural
anthropology; also some responsibilities for management of the anthropology
laboratory and care of the archaeological and ethnographic collections.  We
seek candidates with a commitment to the 4-field approach in anthropology,
to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting, and to involvement of
undergraduates in research.  Total number of courses is seven over the
course of the academic year:  fall semester (3), January Term (1), and
spring semester (3), plus archaeological field school every other summer,
beginning summer 2000.  Must be prepared to develop field school
opportunities locally.

SALARY RANGE: Competitive.  Commensurate with academic qualifications and
professional experience.  Competitive fringe benefits.

Philadelphia in December 1998.  The successful applicant will be required to
