Eric,
I've been there.  It actually isn't a city, of course; it's on an
abandoned military base outside the TOWN of Marfa (eventhough Judd's
estate and artistic descendant (the Chinati Foundation) do own lots of
buildings in town).  The base is a pretty amasing site.  I'll check out
the Vanity Fair article.
Even if it were not there, however, I would still suggest that you visit the
trans-Pecos--not many other places in the country like it.
