Check with your State's Archivist.   Here is Georgia,  our State Archives, The
Carter Presidential Center, and the Library School at Clark Atlanta University
hold an archives institute each summer.   It's a 6 week course that gives
novices an overview and introduction to archiving, via lectures as well as
hands-on workshops, and a practicum.   When I took it some years ago,  I got
to do the practicum at CNN and with the Atlanta Braves' Archives.   It was
interesting as well as very informative.
