Hi Kathy et al.:

Great question! The topic is huge and unwieldy; but I can suggest some
ways in which museums - some examples from Joslyn Art Museum - have
collaborated with various individuals/organizations. In no particular
order:

* Some hotels will pay for dual-purpose ads - for their hotel location
AND for a museum or special exhibitions. They extend a special rate to
folks who reserve a room specifically mentioning the museum or special
exhibition.

* Cable/telephone, grocery, radio/television companies can pay for ads,
and get a discount for their customers (i.e., $1 off per person in the
party for showing a bill/receipt or "shopper's card").

* At Joslyn, Dale Chihuly (love him or hate him - LOL!) held a workshop
for inner city youth the opening weekend of our exhibition "Dale
Chihuly: Inside & Out" (Feb 12-13, 2000). Inspired by Rap and Hip Hop,
he showed them how to paint on paper taped to the floor. This involved
a non-profit organization in North Omaha who selected and transported
the children.

* Again, at Joslyn, our Education department organizes art activities
for Girl Scouts, Junior Girl Scouts, Brownies, etc. that help young
girls/women earn badges. (We had a Super Scout Sunday last November
which drew 1,100 people - to witness an award ceremony to a well-known
Boy Scout personality - with art activities that helped young boys/men
earn badges.)

* Obviously, most (all?) museums collaborate with donors to get
exhibitions paid for . . . with many behind the scenes challenges.
Challenges vary from donor to donor, exhibition to exhibition.

* One last example from Joslyn. (The juices are flowing now!)
The weekend of May 17-18 will be billed as "Military Appreciation
Weekend." (After all, Armed Forces Day is May 18th!) Working with
Stratcom (formerly "SAC"), we'll have a HUMMER on display (outside, with
members of the USMC), an inflatable obstacle course for children, an art
activity, kid-friendly food in the café, - and free admission for those
with federal identification (and their families).

The list can go on. Others can join in?

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Jay Heuman
