John;

According to the Santa Cruz Public Library, the depression is called a
"frog." It served to lower the heat required to bake the brick, and
lightened shipping weight. See
http://www.santacruzpl.org/history/work/limefire.shtml

I would have thought that it might also serve to help anchor the
mortar, but that was just my guess.

Cheers,

I thought some member of the list might have the answer to my question.
W
e
have a small sample of bricks (ca. 1840) in our collection that were
made

by a small-scale local brickmaker and have a rectangular, shallow
recesse
d
(for lack of better word) area on one face. The recessed area is about
on
e
inch from edge of brick on all margins and is deepest in the middle of
th
e
brick (I hope I'm explaining this OK!). Is this recessed area a
by-produc
t
of manufacturing the brick, a by product of some method to remove brick

from mold, or does it serve a functional purpose? If this helps, the
bric
ks
are 4 inches wide, 2.5 inches thick, and 8.5 inches long.

Thanks in advance,
