Thank you for your responses.

Some additional info:  Our collection includes many modern, fully
functional weapons.  Until fairly recently, non-staff were permitted to
transport the pieces in their own vehicles as long as they had a license to
carry (this is still not expressly prohibited in our current policy).
There were/are no written procedures for informing museum security when and
where the firearms are to be moved, and no policy specifically covering
firearms handling and transportation. Needless to say, a change is long
overdue.
