We are a Natural History Museum. So when we look for an Education person we
look for the following:

1. Has this person taught kids before and if so of which age? Elementary and
middle school experience is preferred.
2. Does this person have a science degree? An ideal candidate will have a
degree in education and science
3. Has this person done science projects with children? Has this person
given guided tours and taken children on hikes?
4. Is this person knowledgeable in the area that the education will be
given--in our case it is natural science, desert ecology, animal behavior,
etc. Can this person handle live animals? has this person used live animals
in instruction before?
5. Can this person organize the Museum's educational events and programs? If
so what experience does this person have in this area?
6. Can this person organize educational outreach programs to schools and
other local educational organizations? What experience does this person have
in this area?
7. Can this person recruit suitable teachers and volunteers from the local
educational organizations to run Museum classes, tours, lectures, expert
guidance, etc. What experience does this person have in this area?

Of course, different levels of educational positions have different
criteria. For a Education curator, a Master's degree is preferred, where as
for an entry level instructional position a BA/BS is sufficient.

Hope this helps.
