POISONING OF LAMMERGEIERS IN THE ALTAY MOUNTAINS.
In June 1989 in the Irbistu valley two dead Lammergeiers were
found in their nest territory. This site had been known for 5 years.
Poisoning of the birds was the result of a big scale operation to poison
wolves. Poisonous baits were scattered in the area in winter and were not
removed in spring. Besides the Lammergeiers some Ravens, Golden
Eagles, foxes and shepherds dogs also died due to poisoning. A new pair of
Lammergeiers replaced the dead pair the following year. After this incident
local authorities passed a ban on poisonous baits in the Mountain Altay
Autonomous Region (now the Republic of Altay).
