We all know that festivals can be an excellent way for museums and historic
sites to raise general operating and program funds. They are also a great
way to raise public awareness of your site and your mission, while getting
the entire community involved. Join us for an in-depth study of some of
south Louisiana's most successful festivals and learn the nuts and bolts of
presenting your own festival - for love or money!

Presenters:
David Floyd, Director, LSU Rural Life Museum
Rural Harvest Days is a two-day program held every year in Octiber at the
LSU Rural Life Museum in Baton Rouge. Living history demonstrations
commemorate the agricultural and pre-industrial traditions of 19th century
Louisiana. Harvest time activities, such as syrup making, plowing, corn
grinding and candle making, occur during this educational event. Learn how
it began and what it takes to pull it together, year after year.

Nancy Robert, Site Manager and Fall Festival Chairperson, Destrehan
Plantation
Angela Matherne, Heritage Education Coordinator and Heritage Festival
Chairperson, Destrehan Plantation
The Destrehan Fall Festival is the main source of restoration funding at
Destrhan Plantation. For over thirty-three years, this festival has
continued to evolve and expand to attract a broader segment of the
community. The Destrehan Plantation Heritage Festival offers period craft
demonstrations and performances for children. The success of both events
depends on careful planning and preparations. Both events are community
supported, with volunteers, vendors and sponsors.

Caroline Kennedy, Director, West Baton Rouge Museum
This “festival primer” will give you step-by-step instructions on how to
develop a festival event that is based on your museum mission. Develop a
festival around goals other than fund-raising (!), and it may help build an
audience and refine your PR message. The West Baton Rouge Museum’s
SugarFest was named a Top 20 Event in the Southeastern United States two
years in a row, using this approach. Small museums can reach many key
people in a positive way with a festival generated from your “education
department” versus your “fundraising department.”

Katherine Scherer, Arts and Cultural Programs Director, Arts Council of
Greater Baton Rouge
With a focus on visual and performing arts, FestForAll - a festival for
all - is a downtown celebration of the region’s finest. FestForAll was a
Baton Rouge tradition for 25 years, and after a four-year hiatus, the
festival is again under the direction of the original presenter, the Arts
Council of Greater Baton Rouge. FestForAll enjoyed a terrific renaissance
weekend in May 2003, and production is well underway for this year’s event.

After lunch, we’ll have a tour of Destrehan Plantation, the oldest
documented plantation house is existence in the lower Mississippi River
Valley. Owned by the River Road Historical Society since 1971, the house
has been completely restored. Don’t miss this golden opportunity!

Please contact Diane Losavio, Executive Director of the Louisiana
Association of Museums, at 225-383-6800 or [log in to unmask] if you have
