Subject: Call for Papers
Hello All! Please pardon overlapping postings - this is going to
AmArt-L, CAAH, and Prints-L. I am making this announcement for a
colleague in the Portrait Gallery - please don't reply to me.

Call for Papers

The Victorian Society in America and the National Portrait Gallery will
sponsor a conference, "Portraiture in the Age of Photography,
1850-1910," on Saturday, November 8, 1997 at the National Portrait
Gallery in Washington, D.C. The conference will take a broad approach to
nineteenth- and early twentieth-century portraiture. In addition to
lively papers on painting, photography, and sculpture, we welcome those
on literature, caricature, theater, architecture, etc. Relevance to the
exhibitions "Mathew Brady's Portraits: Images as History, Photography as
Art" and "Edith Wharton's World," which will be at the National Portrait
Gallery, is desirable but not necessary. Honoraria of $250.00 and
reimbursement of some transportation costs are available. Please send
one page proposal plus c.v. to both Barbara L. Michaels, Victorian
Society Conference Chair, 336 Central Park West --#6F, NY, NY 10025, and
to Mary Panzer, Curator of Photographs, National Portrait Gallery, MRC
213, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. 20560 or fax (202)
786-2565 or e-mail [log in to unmask] The deadline is May 31, 1997.
Thanks very much!
