One of the best sources for this topic is Carol Duncan's "Civilizing Rituals:
Inside Public Art Museums," London and New York: Routledge, 1995.  The
chapter on donor memorials is particularly apt.  The entombment in various
capacities is much more common than one would expect.  It is all part of
legacy building for private reasons as much as it is a public gesture of
philanthropy in regard to these institutions.

My dissertation, "John Ringling in perpetua memoria: The Legacy and Prestige
of Art and Collecting," contains a fairly complete bibliography which
incorporates this subject.  I would be glad to send it to you should you
desire.  Feel free to contact me directly if you would like and in that way I
