 Subject: grade school volunteers

Does anyone have an established volunteer program utilizing younger (grade
school) volunteers? Or thoughts/advise about starting one?

Samantha:
We have quite an extensive youth volunteer program that has recently been
capped at 50 participants. Ages: 12-17; must commit to 4 hrs/week for 4
months (we run 3 cycles per year); youth must submit applications on deadline
for each cycle on a space available basis and undergo an interview. We have
always had more applicants than spaces. Students volunteer throughout the
week. They help develop and research their own programs for presentation on
the exhibit floor to the general public (e.g., Science a la Cart and Pocket
Science). There are other special projects, too. Currently this is funded by
a corporate foundation and is very intense. If you would like additional
info, the Program Director is Kristin Jacoby and she can be reached at:

Our "STARS" are wonderful ambassadors and great kids but upper management is
trying to rely on them too heavily and tends to forget that they are "kids."

Good luck,
