Mr. Lee's explanation is closer to what I understood a "docent" was. An
instructor - or tutor is probably better - in a University town in Central
Europe who was NOT on the staff of the University and received a small
stipend for his instruction.  And, I think it is a lot older term than this
century. Lately a "docent" is a proper lady who gave tours in historic
houses in Great Britain without being compensated.

Some more info

I was once told by someone who had worked in Central Europe that the title
"Docent" referred to a senior academic in the Universities of  that region,
which would tie in with the Latin meaning mentioned earlier.

So docents hold you heads high.
