I have found that by running adsubtract
(www.adsubtract.com) while I am online greatly reduces
the amount of spam I receive. It blocks most
advertisements and cookies while you are connected to
the internet.

Recently another mailing list I am on was attacked by a
virus. The virus replied to all unopened email
clipping a sentence of the email and then adding "I
agree completely! see above attatchment." When you
clicked on the attatchment it informed you that the
file was unable to open, but really it was downloaded
to your computer. The clever part about this
particular virus was that it bypassed the mailing list,
replying directly to the sender, so not everyone was
effected.
