Position Announcement
REGISTRAR
Cranbrook Educational Community, including the Art Museum

Cranbrook is an internationally renowned educational community north of
Detroit comprising an Academy of Art, Art Museum, Institute of Science,
Schools and other affiliated cultural and educational programs.  The
315-acre campus and buildings are listed on the National Registry of
Historic Places.  The Art Museum’s collections emphasize 20th-century arts,
crafts, architecture and design, including the restored 1930 Saarinen
House, while temporary exhibitions explore new and emerging artistic forms
and ideas.  

Registrar maintains records pertaining to and oversees the care and
conservation of the community’s cultural properties (excluding the
Institute’s scientific collections), including the outdoor sculpture,
decorative arts and furnishings that remain an integral component of
Cranbrook’s grounds and buildings.  Also serves as the Art Museum’s
Registrar and maintains documentation of the collections; oversees all
shipping and packing arrangements; manages all loans; and manages
Cranbrook’s SNAP! computer system. Assisted by the Art Museum Preparator. 
Reports to Art Museum Director.

Ideal candidate should have BA in art history, museum studies or related
field (MA preferred) and general knowledge of 20th-century art, crafts and
design; five years experience in registrar’s office; thorough knowledge of
museum registration practices, art handling techniques, US customs and
copyright laws, and risk management practices; excellent organizational
skills; computer knowledge; and desire to work collaboratively with
community staff and auxiliary groups in a dynamic and evolving environment.
