                   CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY


The California Historical Society is seeking an experienced and
energetic Executive Director to take office 7/1/99 to manage a $1.1
million budget and professional staff, and take the Society into an
exciting future.  The Executive Director reports to the Society's Board
of Trustees.

The Society was founded in 1871 and is a non-profit institution
designated as the State's official historical society.  It is dedicated
to the history of California and the West, maintaining a research
library, fine arts and photography collections, publication of
California History, a quarterly journal, and year round exhibition and
education programs.  The Society is housed in a newly renovated facility
adjacent to centrally located Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San
Francisco.

Primary duties will be to provide leadership for the Society, carry out
the policies of the board, raise funds for operating, endowment and
capital purposes, prepare and administer the annual budget, hire and
guide professional staff, plan for a financially stable future, and
represent the Society to professional, government and civic agencies,
the media, the Society's membership and the general public.

Candidates should possess a demonstrated interest in California history,
an understanding of the proper care of collections, and know the uses of
technology and multi-media for exhibitions and education.  In addition,
candidates should have a proven fund raising capability, a broad
educational background in the arts or humanities, and administrative
experience in non-profit management.  An interest in and ability to work
with people with a wide range of interests is also required.
