· Since 1985 Dirk van Wyk, former University of Calgary art instructor, has
created the label designs for Big Rock Brewery, Calgary. Ed McNally,
founder of Big Rock, states that "it was the only tool we could afford at
the beginning" to entice beer lovers to the Alberta brew, "we needed a
different and distinctive label". McNally wanted an artist with good
calligraphy and watercolor skills to reflect his distinctly European beers.
According to McNally, Van Wyk's labels have been "integral" to bringing Big
Rock to where it is today. (Edmonton Journal)
