On a different level, appeals are being made for recent catastrophes in this
region (massive floods) on the basis that we also need to "look after our
own." It seems to me that this concept - returning our lives to normalcy,
keeping our institutions healthy, is clearly justifiable. We are in the
middle of an urgent appeal for special one-time contributions to make up for
the failure of the state of Virginia to adopt a budget for this fiscal
year - meaning that all non-state cultural institutions are without state
support. While the appeal went out in August, we have received any number
of surprising special gifts dated after September 11. It is difficult to
analyze the "why" of this event, but I believe American generosity has been
spurred by the events of the moment.
