I'm the director at one of those small museums in the midst of moving from a
working-volunteer-hands-on board to a more "policy" type board. Our budget
is about $150K with 3 staff persons. We still have a few elderly founding
members since our museum is about 35 years old. I would be thrilled with a
larger board. Each board member has a certain circle of influence, and
that's important when it come to giving. And in our not-quite-hands-off
board various areas of expertise are also very important. So, my ideal
fantasy board member would be a master carpenter with plaster experience,
who made his fortune dabbling in real estate and simply loves historic
structures. If you know of any, send them my way! :-)
