JOB DESCRIPTION

Position title: 	Installation Manager & Chief Preparator
Department: 	Exhibitions
Supervisor: 	Director of Exhibitions, Collections & Research
Schedule:	        Full-time
FLSA:	        Exempt

(This position is based in Jersey City, NJ)

The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to the practice and understanding of photography and the reproduced image in all its forms. Through our exhibitions, school, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the role images play in our culture. Since our founding, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level.

ICP is a center where photographers and artists, students and scholars can create and interpret the world of the image.

SUMMARY:
The Chief Preparator/Installation Manager supervises the preparation and installation of art objects for museum exhibitions; plans and directs the fabrication, installation and de installations of temporary and permanent museum exhibits; coordinates the exhibit schedule and budgets; supervises the installation/disassembling crew.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Including those partially delegated to subordinate staff):
•	Serve as head framer and supervises contract framers for large projects.
•	Lead and supervise all aspects of matting, framing, design and installation 
•	Coordinate the safe art handling of the collection and loans including hanging, matting, mounting, framing, moving, packing, crating, shipping, receiving and transporting objects.
•	Responsible for the recruitment and coordination of temporary exhibition art handlers at times of exhibition changes. Efficiently manages labor hours and expenditures.
•	Design and construct pedestals, props, environments, casework, interpretive materials and museum graphics; fabricates shipping crates and storage systems.
•	Directs audio/video installations
•	Oversees the preparation of exhibition spaces for permanent and temporary loan exhibitions. 
•	Dismantles exhibition cases and components, and transporting materials to storage spaces.
•	Maintains records of exhibition technical specifications, as well as a materials and furniture inventory. 
•	Follow museum standards of conservation, security, environmental controls and safety
•	Prepare collection objects for long term storage, as needed for special collections management projects and from de-installed exhibitions and loans
•	Independently produce gallery graphics and labels from supplied templates. Work with outside designers as needed

ADDITIONAL SKILLS & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
•	Skilled in framing and matting techniques
•	Art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures. 
•	Knowledge of a wide variety of material handling, including rigging large works with an attention to detail and safety.
•	Experience using heavy equipment such as scissor lifts, gantries and other equipment used to move or reach large art
•	Operating of woodworking and painting equipment. 
•	Art/museum security systems and procedures. 
•	Principles and practices of museum exhibit and display design, construction and finishing, carpentry work, alterations and repairs. 
•	Lighting techniques in a gallery setting. 
•	The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 
•	Creatively solve construction and display problems. 
•	Must be able to plan, prioritize, schedule, implement and oversee simultaneous projects assuring timely completion. 
•	Ability to research and prepare cost estimates, develop and successfully manage budgets. Broad knowledge of technical equipment and variable media in terms of exhibition presentation, exhibition layout configuration and archival preservation required. 
•	Ability to lift heavy objects
•	Experience sourcing and supervising freelance staff. A pool of freelance installers highly desired.
•	Night and weekend work required during exhibition installation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•	BA preferred
•	2 years in comparable role in museum or non-commercial gallery or 5 years of progressive responsibilities in non-managerial roles 
•	Familiarity with PC and MAC design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CAD-Design, InDesign and collection management software required. 
•	Working knowledge of and comfort with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

•	Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
•	Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
•	Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
