Liz,
I am originally from Norteastern Pennsylvania (the Poconos outside
of Scranton) and this sounds like pretty much every wedding I went to in the
1970s through 1990s. Youngstown and Scranton have many similarites in
industry and ethnic composition. I believe this type of wedding is
particularly common to Italian (especially the Wedding soup and the Cookie
Table) and to a lesser extent, Slavic communities. This type of wedding
seems to be disappearing because it is viewed as "old fashioned" not grand
enough for today's wedding standards. This is just my personal experience,
but what you described is EXACTLY what I have seen at many, many Scranton
weddings.
