In New Mexico the State Historic Preservation Division is very involved in
identifying and offering information on conservation of WPA related
buildings and artwork. They have all kinds of data related to federal
expenditures county by county in the WPA period. Also potential sources of
funding for activities related to conservation. A similar office in your
state government may be able to help you.
Also, if you learn where the artists are from, do a white pages search on
msn.com for similar names in that town or region. In a WPA program at the
Museum of International Folk Art we were involved in tracing artisans' work
in Clayton, NM. We pulled tiny bits of information from old newspaper
articles and were able to find several family members to connect with.
