"Preserving the Wright Brothers Legacy "
           Symposium, Oct. 22, 1999
Sponsored by Ohio Humanities Council,The Engineers Club of
Dayton/Foundation, Ohio Preservation Council, The Aviation Trail and
the Friends of the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library

The Dayton and Montgomery Co. Public Library is organizing a Symposium
in cooperation with Engineers’ Club of Dayton and several other Miami
Valley institutions, to be held October 22. This symposium is
motivated by the approaching centennial year of powered flight, 2003,
and by the several rare written and photographic records and other
artifacts of the Wright brothers which are in the holdings of the
Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library and the other cooperating
institutions. In addition to speakers and participants from the Dayton
area, this cooperative effort will bring several individuals from Ohio
and across the nation to talk about their activities in preserving,
sharing and exhibiting their holdings in aviation history. The
symposium is entitled, "Preserving the Wright Brothers' Legacy."
Participating institutions, in addition to the Dayton and Montgomery
County Public Library and the Friends of the Library, include the
Engineers' Club of Dayton and the Engineers Foundation of Dayton, The
Ohio Preservation Council, Aviation Trail, Inc., Carillon Historical
Park, Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Central State
University and Air Force Materiel Command. This program is being mainly
funded by the Ohio Humanities Council and National Endowment for the
Humanities in the amount of $ 3,815. Ohio Humanities Council is a
statewide nonprofit organization supported by the National Endowment
for the Humanities, the state of Ohio, and private contributions.
OHC's mission is to "support and develop, for all the people of Ohio,
public humanities programs that have the power to enhance the quality
of our lives by helping us to interpret our own experience, to
strengthen our sense of community, and to connect us to a wider world."
The Council is governed by a twenty-five member volunteer board, half
public and half academic. The Dayton and Montgomery County Public
Library and all the other participating institutions are very thankful
to the Ohio Humanities Council for making possible this program.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

By their pioneering efforts in powered flight, the Wright brothers
transformed the nation and the world by bringing countries, continents
and cultures closer together. The sociological, economic and military
impact of their work has been profound.

As the year 2003 approaches, which will mark both Ohio's bicentennial
and the centennial of the Wright brothers' historic flight at Kitty
Hawk, it would be appropriate that Ohioans be reminded and become aware
of aviation's place in Ohio History. Dayton and southwestern Ohio
became the center of the early aircraft industry, adding to Ohio's
already existing reputation as a center of inventions and
high-technology industry. The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near
Dayton is the nation's largest air base and demonstrates, on the one
hand, the continuing influence of aviation on the life and economy of
everyday Ohioans while reminding us, on the other hand, how the
airplane has revolutionized modern warfare, lifestyle and
transportation.

The aims of this one-day symposium are threefold.
1. Experts, from both local and out-of-state institutions, specializing
in archives and preservation of paper and artifacts relating to the
Wright brothers', will stress the importance of preserving our written
historical records, indicate where rare artifacts from the early years
of powered flight are on display in Ohio and elsewhere, and describe
the methods by which they have been preserved. In this way these
records and artifacts will be more accessible to all Ohioans now and in
the future.
2. At the conclusion of the symposium, tours will be given at two sites
containing artifacts of the Wright brothers work. At The Wright Cycle
Company building, part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National
Historical Park, participants will see one of the original Wright
bicycle shops. At the Carillon Historical Park, the 1905 Wright Flyer
III is on display. These artifacts exist because of the dedicated
efforts of local citizens. These tours will remind out-of-towners as
well as local participants of Dayton's aviation history.
3. As a by-product of this symposium, a Guide to the Wright Brothers
Holdings will be developed and made available to institutions and the
general public. This Guide will incorporate holdings from the home
institutions of the speakers and panelists as well from institutions
throughout Ohio, providing a valuable resource to all of Ohio's
citizens.

This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Ohio
Humanities Council, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

NOTE: We will be sending more information about the symposium soon.
