EDITORIAL ASSISTANTS

The British Museum is undertaking an exciting public multimedia project: COMPASS (Collections Multimedia Public Access System).
COMPASS is a database with text, high resolution images and multimedia effects, with information targetted at the non-specialist. Phase 1 (5,000 objects) will go live on 50 terminals in the historic Reading Room in December 2000. The web launch is scheduled for May 2000, with a substantial preview of the features and content.

The COMPASS Project team are looking for 2 new team members to assist in a key area of the project:

Editorial Assistant: Indexer (F/T 6 month contract: £14,500 p.a.)

Responsible for the indexing of object and background information, as well as the creation of thesauri for the various search mechanisms into the COMPASS database. You should be able to work to demanding targets, while maintaining consistency and accuracy. 

A graduate degree in an area relevant to the Museum's collections, and computer literacy are essential. Experience of working with museum collections databases and or public access systems; familiarity with the interpretation and classification of visual material, are all highly desirable.

Editorial Assistant (F/T 6 month contract: £14,500 p.a.)

Supporting the Creative Editor in the writing and editing of the text content of COMPASS (mainly in the form of 200 word long summaries). You should be able to write clearly for a non-specialist audience and work fast while maintaining accuracy, and imagination.

A graduate degree in an area relevant to the Museum's collections, computer literacy, skills in communication and writing are essential. Publication and/or editorial experience, preferably in an area relevant to the Museum's collections, would be an advantage.
