I recall that a few years ago (perhaps 1990 or so) the San
    Francisco Chronicle did a long article on problems with the de
    Young Museum and it's many "lost" items that had shown up later in
    other collections, etc.  I do not recall if this resulted in any
    legal action, however, the article caused a lot of heat for the
    museum.
