We have four temporary jobs available at the Oregon Historical Society, all for our exciting, new "Treasures of Oregon" project.  Job descriptions for all 4 are listed here.

A.  Outreach Coordinator
Full-Time, 15-Month position, beginning October 1998
Project Outline:
 The Oregon Historical Society is mounting a traveling exhibit housed in a 48 foot semi-trailer.  Entitled "Treasures of Oregon," the exhibit includes many of the most powerfully symbolic items from the OHS collections.  This self-contained exhibit will travel to sites throughout the state from February 1999 - October 1999.  As part of a three-person rotation, the position requires constant traveling, including weekends, for the nine month period the exhibit is on the road.  When the exhibit is open, there will be active interaction with the visitors, the OHS Affiliate(s) hosting the exhibit, and local media reps.
General Position Summary:
 The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating all outreach activities associated with the "Treasures of Oregon" exhibit.  The Outreach Coordinator will serve as a critical liaison with OHS Affiliate organizations and other host groups during the exhibit period.  Other specific job duties include distributing pertinent literature and general information about OHS and its various programs; maintaining appropriate project records and scheduling documents; preparing a final report to the bring the project to closure.
Education/Experience/Skills:
 Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline such as History, Education, Social Sciences, or Communications is required.  Some experience in a museum, interpretive center, or gallery is required.   Valid Oregon driver's license is required.  Experience in project management or special events coordination is desired.  Good oral and written communication skills are essential.  Public speaking ability for presentations will be important.  Must be familiar with basic computer technology and various applications.  Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.  Ability to work under pressure.  Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
Job Conditions:
 Project requires flexible schedule with extensive travel to rural communities around the state, including isolated areas with few amenities.  Will involve some physical exertion at times; ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

B  FIELD OPERATIONS OFFICER 
Full-Time 14 Month position, beginning November
Project Outline:
The Oregon Historical Society is mounting a traveling exhibit housed in a 48 foot semi-trailer.  Entitled, *Treasures of Oregon*, the exhibit includes many of the most powerfully symbolic items from the collections of the Oregon Historical Society.  The exhibit will travel to sites throughout the state from February 1999 - October 1999.  The exhibit is self-contained.  As a part of a three person rotating team (2 persons on, 1 person off in any given period) the position requires constant traveling, including weekends, for the nine month period the exhibit is on the road.  This will include lengthy periods of driving, followed by fairly intense physical activity during set-up and knock-down in each location.  When the exhibit is open, there will be intense interaction with visitors while ensuring the exhibit*s security.  Hours will be irregular depending on when the exhibit is open to the public and other scheduling factors.
General Position Summary:
This position is responsible for providing a high level of security and operational efficiency for the artifacts, staff, exhibitry, assets, and equipment of the traveling exhibit.   The Officer will act as the team leader during active field operations and ensure that security and operational logistics promote visitor enjoyment.  The Officer will conduct security & logistical operations as follows:
(1) Field Operations Security Liaison & Coordination - The Officer will be responsible for coordination of OHS operational security arrangements with local law enforcement agencies, coordination of traveling exhibit road movements with volunteer drives, appropriate law enforcement and related public agencies, and ensuring adequate access and egress, parking facilities, and emergency services / equipment for exhibit sites. 
(2) Field Operations Risk Management & Logistical Coordination - The Officer will ensure the proper execution of the transportation, loading/unloading, installation/de-installation, and storage requirements of the OHS collection management staff during the exhibit.   The position will be cross-trained by OHS collections management staff so as to be able to assist with collections management tasks.
(3) Field Operations Security - The position is responsible for monitoring staff and visitor access to exhibits and related areas, monitoring and controlling access to restricted areas, and monitoring and controlling visitor deportment and report any security, logistical, or maintenance problems to the Security Services Manager or Director / Facilities that can not be easily resolved by the staff team in the field.  The position will ensure that communications (cell phone, fax, radio net) are operational at all times during active field operations.
Education / Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent.  College level course work or equivalent training in security / law enforcement, project management, transportation management, business administration.  Four years experience in security force work.  Minimum of one year*s experience in field operations & logistics, or equivalent experience.  No history or presence of any significant psychiatric disorder and be emotionally stable.  Possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Oregon driver*s license.

C.  Curatorial Technician (Full-Time; Date of Hire through December 1999)

--General Position Summary:
      (1) Responsible for ensuring that the traveling objects and exhibit media are protected and maintained in accordance with museum standards and practices.  Due to the arduous conditions under which the exhibit will be traveling, and the fragile nature of many of the items on display, ongoing care of the items from the collections will form the primary duties for this position.  This will include basic housekeeping functions, monitoring the condition of the exhibits, and performing basic maintenance.  In conjunction with Field Operations Officer, ensure that the displayed items and the exhibits remain protected, secure and undamaged while on tour.
      (2) Provide field response to all public inquiries concerning the care and treatment of historic objects and collections, and options surrounding the donation of objects to museum collections.  Perform basic evaluation of historic objects as requested by the visiting public and refers questions to OHS Artifact Collections Department as required.  In consultation with OHS Artifact Collections staff, informs potential donors of appropriate repositories and procedures for museum donation.  Acts to deliver basic interpretive and education services to the visitors to supplement the exhibits.  Ability to answer basic questions on the history of Oregon, and be prepared to refer more extensive questions to appropriate people or agencies as required.
     (3) Ensures that a visual record is kept for both marketing and archival purposes of the progress of the exhibit, using conventional and digital photography and videotape.
Specific Job Skills:
--Working knowledge of professional standards relating to conservation, care, handling, presentation, and security of museum and archival collections.
--Demonstrated ability to monitor and report on environmental conditions and physical condition of objects.
--Proven ability to interact effectively with other staff and with the public, while ensuring the security of valuable objects.
--Ability to assist physically in the set-up and knock-down of large components of a traveling exhibit.
--Ability to carry out duties under sometimes arduous field conditions.
--Skills and abilities in interpretive program development and presentation.
--Ability to operate conventional and digital still cameras and video cameras.
--Ability to obtain a valid Oregon Driver*s License.
--Some knowledge and ability to diagnose and field service electrical, audio-visual and HVAC systems would be desirable.
----Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor*s Degree in History, Museum Studies, or related field.  Academic specialization or interest/knowledge of Oregon/Northwest history.  Education or experience in conservation of museum and/or archival material.  Education or experience in interpretive program development and presentation.  Experience in dealing with the public in large numbers, in an educational or presentation capacity.

D.  Museum Curriculum/Program Specialist (full time, 3 months, start Fall 1998) 
This person will develop educational materials and programs that will accompany *Treasures of Oregon,* an exhibit traveling throughout Oregon 1999-2000.  This person will create a unified package of  materials, activities, and suggested programs intended for students, teachers, other educators, and any other identified audiences in the communities to which the exhibit travels.  The primary product will be a educational kit with curricular materials and possibly artifact kits, school tour guides, or other information.  Some of this package must be adaptable to other formats (e.g., website, newspaper tabloid).  Also to be produced are suggestions for related public programs and several *pre-packaged* programs available to venues upon request. This person will work closely with the *Treasures of Oregon* Exhibition Team.
----Position Requirements
Understanding of Oregon content standards and benchmarks.  Proven creative approach to applying these methods and requirements to exhibits and informal learning environments and to reaching and communicating to a diverse audience.  Ability to work both independently and in a team, to complete projects by deadlines, and to work in a fast-paced environment.  Prior experience in museum education, interpretive programming/ education, educational outreach, or teaching required.  Excellent writing skills and working knowledge of WordPerfect or equivalent required.  
----Education/Experience
BA required; History, American Studies, or Education emphasis preferred.  Advanced degree or equivalent experience in museum education, museum studies, teaching/instruction preferable.
----Job Conditions
This position must meet rigid deadlines.  Able to lift 40 lbs.  Extended periods (day-long) at a word processor keyboard and monitor are required periodically to complete projects.
