Call for Museum Program Reviewers for
New 2000 National Leadership Grant

Washington, DC.--The Institute of Museum and Library Services is looking for
field reviewers for its new 2000 National Leadership Grant program. Field
reviewers are needed for Museums in the Community, Professional Practices
(for museums), Museums Online, and Model Programs of Library and Museum
Cooperation, within the National Leadership Grant program.

Museums in the Community replaces and expands the former Museum Leadership
Initiative (MLI) program. Museums in the Community supports
museum/community partnerships that enhance the quality of community life.
High quality after-school programs for children, using museum resources to
create an enriched and safe learning environment for school-aged students is
the priority for FY 2000. Beth Ann Schmitt, 202-606-4645 [log in to unmask]

Professional Practices (for museums) replaces and expands the former
Professional Services Program (PSP). Professional Practices supports
programs that address core professional issues in museums such as strategic
planning, professional training, and leadership development. Developing
programs and materials for small museums (the largest segment of museums in
the country) is the priority for FY 2000. Christine Henry, 202-606-8687

Museums Online is entirely new. This is the first federal program designed
specifically to make technology resources available to all types of museums.
It addresses the technological needs of museums. Support is given for model
projects that address the challenges of digitizing museum collections,
and/or demonstrate the educational impact of connecting museums and their
communities through technology. With this support, museums will share the
ideas and information of thousands of museum collections with classrooms,
community centers, and homes across America. Mary Estelle Kennelly,

Model Programs of Library and Museum Cooperation supports innovative
projects that model how museums and libraries can work together to expand
their service to the public-with emphasis on how the community is served,
technology is used, or education is enhanced. Jeanne McConnell,

These new priorities of the 2000 National Leadership Grant program will
promote many benefits for the museum field, broaden outreach, and
disseminate promising practices.

Field reviewers can expect to receive six to eight National Leadership Grant
applications in the mail from IMLS to read and evaluate between March 24,
2000 and April 21, 2000. (Field reviewers must mail their applications back
to IMLS by April 21.) Reviewers should have experience in museums or
professional service organizations. You can still participate as a field
reviewer even if your own institution submits a 2000 National Leadership
Grant application.

Reviewer application forms and resumes must be returned by March 1, 2000.
(If you responded to previous calls for FY 2000 reviewers, your material is
already on file.)
You can access the reviewer application form on the IMLS website at
http://www.imls.gov/grants/review/how_mp.htm.

We hope you will serve as a field reviewer for these National Leadership
Grant applications. By volunteering your time and expertise to this
process, you will serve the field and gain personal benefits in many ways.
You will hear of cutting-edge museum programs, learn how to write a
competitive National Leadership Grant for your organization, and play a
decisive role in furthering the goals of the museum field.
