At Conner Prairie (a living history museum) Collections and Exhibits are one department, School Programs and Public Programs are a dept., Interpretation is a dept., and Research is a dept. We are all in the Musuem Programs Division. The name Museum Programs was chosen specifically to remind the public that we are a museum.

It looks like this:
Director for Museum Programs
     Museum Progams Assistant
Assoc. Dir. for Historic Resources (Collections and Exhibits Dept.)
        Chief Curator
        Assoc. Curator
        Exhibit Preparator
        Registrar
        Conservation Tech
Historic Clothing Co-ordinator (Costume Room for Interpreter use)
           1 Assistant (part-time)
           1 Seamstress (part-time)
Textile Specialist staff (part-time reproduction textiles)
    Assoc. Dir. for Interpretation
        Manager for Historic Grounds
            1 Interpreter Specialist
Manager for Conner Estate/Trade Post/Lenape Camp
             1 Interpreter Specialist
             3 Lead Interprters
        Manager for Liberty Corner
             2 Interpreter Specialist
             1 Lead Interpreter
        Manager for Agriculture
            1 Program Super for Agriculture
            1 Interpreter Specialist for Agriculture
Program Supervisor for Foodways and Gardens
            1 Interpreter Specialist
            5 Menu planners (also interpreters)
(Each of the above interpretation managers and program supervisor for foodways is the supervisor for 15 - 20 intrpreters.)
Assoc. Dir. for Public and School Progams (vacant)
        Manager for Public Programs
Program Super. for Camp and Scouting
Program Super. for Youth Experiences (youth volunteers)
Program Super. for Music and Theater
        Manager for School Programs
            Program Super. for School Programs
            Museum Programs Assistant
     Assoc. Dir. for Research
Archivist/Librarian (yet to be okayed in budget)

It's not the best organization, but we get along so it isn't a big problem for us. It's the other 4 divisions who get confused about how things work down here (we're underground - literally). CP informally reffers to us as the Collections Dept. and the Education Staff, because that's what we call ourselves.

Dear Colleagues -- Who among you are in museums where curatorial,
registration and education staff are together in a department or division
that reports to you or to someone else because you are responsible for
education and interpretation, public programs as well as overseeing the
exhibition process. What is that department or division called (eg.
Education and Programs; Exhibitions and Programs; Collections and Programs;
Education and Interpretation, etc.) What is your position title, and is
this structure successful? Looking forward to your comments -- on or off
line (completely confidential). We're trying to look at several structural
models that would emphasize the important relationship between education,
exhibitions, collections and programs. Thanks so much for your help. See
many of you at AAM/Dallas. Cheers, Geri Thomas
