Yes, I agree.  Our walls also have plywood behind them when I use the
screws.  In some galleries we have also covered the plywood with canvas..  I
hold the plexi up and level, then mark the spots where the L hooks go.  Then
screw them part of the way in.. Then place the plexi and slowly turn them to
the right position.
