Director of Museum Operations

Looking for Director of Museum Operations (UT classification
0477) to implement and direct business, budgetary and
administrative affairs and programs of Texas Memorial Museum
(TMM) at the University of Texas at Austin (UT).  Successful
candidate will report to TMM Director and will be responsible for
day-to-day management and performance evaluation of
approximately 22 individuals, in fields ranging from science to
collection management to public outreach.  Successful candidate will
manage a budget in excess of $1 million and be expected to
independently and cooperatively generate and implement novel
business opportunities for the TMM, increasing private funding base
and annual operating budget from 50-100% in the next few years
with a concomitant increase in staff.  S/he must be flexible and a
team-player while being highly self-motivated.  S/he will produce
annual and monthly projections for a large, complex budget
consisting of a mixture of fixed income sources (university and state
accounts), and "soft-money" (museum store income, biological
research grant and contract sources, intellectual property business
opportunities, etc.)  Successful candidate will be expected to facilitate
development of all relevant areas of grant applications, especially
those relevant to natural history collections.

Mandatory qualifications:

Must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and ten (10) years
experience in museum administration, including planning,
management and implementation of budgets of over $500,000.  Must
be familiar with not-for-profit accounting rules and regulations. Must
be experienced in long-term and short-term business and strategic
planning.  Must have experience in managing large staffs ranging
from scientific to clerical personnel, including conducting staff
evaluations, promotions, and terminations.  Must be capable of
working with minimal clerical support.

Must be experienced with ethics and practices of natural history
collections, including scientific use, conservation, accessioning,
deaccessioning, and purchasing of collections.  Must have
experience with managing scientific and technical staff.  Must have
experience with laws and ethical considerations about scientific
collecting of living and fossil organisms.

Must be skilled at use of microcomputers and mainframe computers,
especially with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred qualifications:

Applicants preferred with more than 10 years administrative,
managerial and executive experience in private natural history
museums, with evidence of an entrepreneurial and dynamic approach
to all phases of natural history museum management from science to
public outreach.
