"Communicating Through Exhibitions"
November 22-27

Exhibitions have tremendous power to shape the messages, perspectives and
values that museums communicate to their publics. In this course you will
explore the role of exhibitions in the museum context, and examine the key
elements involved in creating relevant, meaningful exhibitions. The
importance of community involvement, team work and consultation is stressed.


Topics include:
* the history, functions and purpose of exhibitions
* the role of the artifact
* frames of reference for communication
* issues of cultural diversity, perspective and voice
* the development of storylines
* methodologies for exhibition planning
* accessibility
* roles of the curator, educator, registrar, conservator, other staff and
community representatives
* project management
* funding and sponsorship
* temporary and traveling exhibition
* ethical considerations
* visitor research and evaluation techniques
Dates: November 22-27, 1999

Tuesday, November 23 - The Ecology of Exhibitions
* Messages, means of communication and clienteles: overview of communication
and learning theories; introduction to evaluation
* Hands-on exercise: Messages vs. objectives
* Panel Discussion: Reflections on exhibition development with guests:
Nicholas Tuele, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Martha Black, Royal British
Columbia Museum
* Exercise: Front-end evaluation of exhibition theme and main messages

* Interpretive planning: Development of a blueprint for the exhibition
* Selection and development of appropriate media
* Hands-on exercise: Interpretive planning
* Exhibition visits to the Royal British Columbia Museum and the Art Gallery
of Greater Victoria
Thursday, November 25 - Hot tips to keep your cool: Organizing your
Exhibition
* Exhibition development process
* Hands-on exercise: Project management
* The art of exhibition text writing
* Group project: Interpretive planning and formative evaluation
Friday, November 26 - Our Voice, Their Voices: Communicating with our Public
* Hands-on exercise: Text writing
* Panel Discussion: Exhibitions for and with the community; Community guests
include Geoff Smith, Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, BC Ministry of
Education
* Values of consultation: Lessons learned from panel discussion
Saturday, November 27 - Pulling the Pieces Together
* Presentation of all group projects
* Review discussion
* Presentation of a "check-list" for exhibition development
