I agree.  I had the opportunity to choose my own wall surfaces for the
galleries when we built a new facility, and I chose drywall over plywood.  I
asked for 1" of ply, they gave me 1/2" for cost reasons.  I'd recommend 1",
but if you have to use 1/2" get the next higher quality of drywall than they
are offering you--it's more durable.  P.S.  When choosing paint finishes for
a gallery, go with a FLAT--it hides the patches better than an eggshell finish.

We used to have self-healing fabric over regular plywood in the old
gallery--it got very dirty very quickly, and although we could clean it it
was never even and looked terrible.
