Sorry, I know I'm a little late on this one, but...
The Museum Studies Certificate at Harvard University's Extension School
rarely gets a mention on the list when programs are discussed. I just
completed this program this summer. What's particularly appealing is its
flexibility: you can complete the program in any time frame from one to five
years, and while you must complete core courses in museum disciplines
(administration, curation, exhibition are some examples), you can also take
other electives in fields that interest you. I concentrated on non-profit
management and fundraising; some of my contemporaries chose to focus on
history of art; etc. etc. An internship is also required; while it can be
done at a Boston area museum (I chose the MFA), you can also complete it
(within the 5 year time frame) at a museum anywhere else in the world.
Classes are held in the evenings (5pm onwards) to accommodate those who
work; great for those already working in museums who want to take courses,
for those (like me) training for a career change, or for those who would
just simply like to learn more about museums!
Anyone interested in more detailed info on the program should contact the
program coordinator, Linda Newberry, at [log in to unmask]
