All of your responses have been helpful.   After lunch (never try to be
considerate on low blood sugar!) I was able to separate the letters that
made some sense (which I responded to with "sorry, no, but here's someone
you might want to contact if you haven't already") and those that were truly
off-the-mark (and tossed them).

I very much value all the opinions expressed on this topic and many others.
