Sue and I spent the past two Saturdays at country fairs. The first was at a
tiny village called Middleville, where their 150th fall fair was marked by
flags at half mast and a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks.

Yesterday, we were volunteers at the 138th Carp Fair, the largest country
fair in eastern Ontario (where every village has a fair, it seems).
Prominent in the centre of the front rank of the Royal Canadian Legion
colour party was Old Glory and the ceremonies commenced with the singing of
the US national anthem, The Canadian flag, on the highest mast at the fair,
had been at half mast at the start and was raised to the peak during the
singing of the anthems. It was all very moving and a wonderful expression of
friendship. It was, as far as anyone knows, the first time the American flag
or anthem had been used in the 138 years the fair has been held.

I thought you might like to know.
