Money : How To Earn It - Earned Income Strategies for Museums

A Conference Co-Sponsored by the Cooperstown Graduate Association and the
Gallery Association of New York State
October 22-24, 1998

This two-day conference will explore ways that museums and arts
organizations generate earned income to help their bottom lines. It is
oriented toward helping employees and volunteers maximize the opportunities
to stabilize their institutions.

Conference presenters, specialists with museum and business backgrounds,
will propose ideas and outline strategies for income production. Speakers
will offer specific examples of successful ventures as well as highlight
legal and curatorial  concerns associated with income producing projects.

Sessions will provide nuts and bolts specifics drawn from proven projects
ongoing in museums and arts organizations. Through case studies, panelists
will examine the benefits and drawbacks of various income generating
efforts. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences and stories of
successes and failures.

Keynote speakers, Dennis O'Toole, CEO and President of Strawberry Banke Inc.
and Kinshasha Holman Conwill, Director of the Studio Museum in Harlem, will
discuss the pressures forcing museums and arts organizations to concern
themselves with entrepreneurial revenue programs and the institutional risks
of becoming revenue oriented.


The conference is organized by the alumni of the Cooperstown Graduate
Program (CGP), a nationally-known, two year Master's Degree program
co-sponsored by the State University of New York at Oneonta and the New York
State Historical Association.  The sessions will be held at CGP and the
museums of the Historical Association in Cooperstown.

Cooperstown is easily reached by automobile. Bus service and van
transportation is available to Oneonta and Cooperstown.  The Syracuse and
Albany airports are about two hours away. If you fly, please call us to see
if we can assist with airport transportation.
