Hey, that makes me think that maybe raffia would work, too.  You'd have to cut the strips to shorter lengths, but the illusion would probably work.

We've purchased raffia in bags to use to decorate Christmas trees.  I think I've seen it at WalMart and K-Mart at Christmas, but otherwise check Christmas suppliers like Midwest or Silvestri.  Maybe novelty suppliers like Oriental Traders or Southern Importers would carry it, or even my favorite mail order prom supply place, Stumps (contact me off list for the phone numbers and addresses if you need them.  Anyone who does exhibits really should look at a Stumps catalog--it's a great idea source book).

I just had an idea - how about disecting a children's costume hula skirt - the ones that are the hay-coloured plastic strips to look like grass.  You'd probably have to coat them with a non-reflective varnish to take the plastic shine off of them but it might look real enough from an exhibit standpoint.
