Curatorial Assistant, Chinese Art Department



The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco offers an exciting opportunity for a

motivated individual, with strong administrative, research, and language

skills, to support a dynamic and prominent Chinese Art department.

The Curatorial Assistant will assist the Senior Curator of Chinese Art in

programs and projects, including research, cataloguing, acquisition,

conservation, education, exhibition, registration, and publication.  This

is a full-time position, 40 hours per week.



The incumbent will:



Ø     Assist with the maintenance and documentation of the departmental

collection; assist in the classification, description, and interpretation

of artworks; conduct research for identifying and interpreting the objects;

write interpretative and informational labels, brochures, and other related

materials as required; assist in the research and preparation for grants;

update and organize files.



Ø     Assist in planning, developing, and organizing exhibitions; assist in

supervising the preparation and installation of artworks; coordinate

administrative details of exhibitions as required.



Ø     Respond to requests for information about objects; conduct tours of

the Chinese art collection for visitors; answer correspondence related to

Chinese art; prepare and maintain operational records of departmental

activities.



Minimum Qualifications



·     Master’s Degree in Chinese Art History; knowledge of Chinese jades

and ceramics preferred



·     Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and

Mandarin Chinese; good presentation skills



·     Strong administrative, organizational, and planning skills;

analytical, research, and problem-solving skills



·     Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through

on assigned tasks; flexible, dependable, and resourceful



·     Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good

judgment



·     Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office;

familiarity with Chinese Star (Chinese word processing program)



·     Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working

relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, donors, and representatives

of other institutions



·     Ability to physically handle delicate and irreplaceable objects of

art with extreme care



Compensation



$17.58-21.11/hr.*



*Please note:  1. New hires start at the beginning of the salary range. 2.

The position is represented by SEIU 1021.
