Michael,

You are prudent to be wary of the durability of monofilament. I have
seen numerous examples of failure from UV exposure where the object was
only saved by the fact that numerous strands had been used to suspend
it. Stainless steel fishing leader is a good alternative. It comes in a
wide variety of strengths and is often nylon coated which gives a little
softer contact with the object. It can be attached by using crimp on
sleeves to form loops. This crimped joint will be the weakest point in
the system, especially since the nylon coating can give way under high
stress, so be sure to do tests before usage to determine actual load
bearing capacity. Doubling the crimps and stripping the nylon coating
are both useful in increasing capacity. Small spools are available at
most fishing shops, but if you need a bit, look for a commercial fishing
supply. The cost goes down dramatically for large spools.

Good Luck.
