Hi,

I prefer flat storage but that's not always practical so if there isn't flat
storage space we roll them in the same way that has been discussed.

That said, I did want to point out that the US Flag Code says nothing about
folding burial flags:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode04/usc_sup_01_4_10_1.html

As long as it's done respectfully, there's nothing to keep anyone from
unfolding a flag and storing it in order to preserve it for future
generations. Imo, that's the most respectful thing you could do. Storing it

folded would cause creases, not to mention there could be vices inside it
that
aren't seen unless the flag is unfolded (bugs, mold, etc.), which would lead
to faster deterioration. I don't know how preservation, when done the correct

way, could be considered disrespectful.

Here's a good link: http://www.heritagepreservation.org/NEWS/flag.htm

Also, if you need some way to show that it's okay to unfold a casket flag,
here is a link to the VA website regarding the flags:
http://www.cem.va.gov/bbene/bflags.asp.

They are often donated by family members to national cemeteries to be flown
on
their "Avenue of Flags" on patriotic holidays. For examples, google "Avenue
of Flags" and "national cemetery."

A couple more links that might help you out as well:
http://www.legion.org/flag/faq
http://www.legion.org/flag/questions_answers/91523/may-casket-flag-be-used-an
y-proper-display-purpose

Good luck explaining this to your volunteer.

Hope this helps,
Lisa

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Proper Storage of Flags

Greetings colleagues! We were recently given a large collection of military
memorabilia from the local American Legion Post that is closing their post
building. Among the items are five US flags, one of which is a burial flag,
one is a 48 star flag in a display cabinet and three flags of undetermined
significance other than the obvious of being our nation's symbol. My
question to the list is this: how do we properly and respectfully package
for storage these flags? One of my volunteers, a retired army person,
admonished us to NOT unfold the burial flag, but beyond that he has no
recommendations for storing flags. Any direction would be appreciated.
Thank you.
