Call to Artists for Major Public Sculpture Program in Jackson
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 19, 2003
CONTACT: Heather Price, Vice President for Public Programs, Ella Sharp
Museum, 517/787-2320 or [log in to unmask]

JACKSON, Mich. - The Public Art Committee of the Arts and Cultural Alliance
of Jackson County is seeking artists who are interested in submitting
already-existing original pieces of public sculpture to be temporarily
installed along the Grand River Arts Walk in downtown Jackson. The Arts
Walk is a landscaped riverwalk that will be book-ended on the southeast by
Consumers Energy's new corporate headquarters and on the northwest by the
future Armory Arts Project. A Design Review Board will select one piece
that will serve as the focal point of Consumers Energy's corporate plaza.
Three additional pieces will be selected for installation along the stretch
of the Grand River Arts Walk closest to the corporate plaza. The Ella Sharp
Museum will serve as curators for the project.

While these four installations will be the first in a public art program
newly adopted by The City of Jackson, they are in close proximity to an
already existing installation of Summer Night Tree, a work by
internationally acclaimed sculptor Louise Nevelson.

All works selected by the Design Review Board will be marketed as available
for purchase during their two-year temporary installation period. Artists
will be reimbursed for all costs associated with transportation and
installation of a selected work. Proceeds from the purchase of a selected
work will go to the artist. A major unveiling of selected pieces is planned
in conjunction with the grand opening celebration of Consumers Energy
Corporation's new headquarters early this summer.

Interested artists should visit the Ella Sharp Museum web site
www.ellasharpmuseum.org and click on "Call for Artists: Public Sculpture
Downtown." You can also call the Ella Sharp Museum at (517) 787-2320.
Deadline for submissions is 5:00pm, March 31, 2003.
