I concur.  I went to N.Y.U.'s I.F.A. (grad '83) and although it was an
excellent graduate program in art history, the (few) people from the I.F.A.
that tried to do the museum program dropped out quickly (it's run from
"downtown") and told everybody not to do it.  The irony was that I was
accepted at the I.F.A. but NOT the museum program, and I went anyway
thinking I could always reapply after my first year...then I didn't want to
based on the bad reviews.  P.S. Another avenue for people looking to break
into art museums is an arts administration program.  Columbia has such a
program but for the first year it's identical to their M.B.A. program, then
digresses in the second year.  There are a number of other arts admin.
