HUNT IS ON FOR STOLEN BRUEGHEL PAINTING
Art Insurer Offers Reward for Information

photograph: http://www.cpprot.net/brueghel.jpg

A small painting by Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564-1637 or 1638)
has been stolen in Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. The circular
panel measuring just 17cm (6˝") in diameter (excluding frame) is
descriptively entitled A Farmer and Six Geese. The theft took place
on Sunday 18th April.

Immediate action to recover the picture was taken by insurer AXA Art,
appointing leading loss adjuster Mark Dalrymple to work with local
police in Holland.

"There is no doubt that the small size, portability and high value of
the painting were the key factors in making this work a target for
the thieves," says Susie Collier, claims controller at AXA Art.

"Time is always of the essence with thefts. The quicker we can get
to work, the greater our chance of recovery. This work, by a well-
known artist, cannot be sold legitimately on the open market," adds
Clare Pardy, development director of the Company.

A reward of €30,000 is being offered by AXA Art for information
leading to the recovery of the picture, subject to specific
conditions.

AXA Art is committed to the recovery of stolen works. Earlier this
year the Company was successful in restoring a rare collection of
ivories to Lord Thompson's collection, which had been on loan to the
Art Gallery of Ontario, and recently, within the UK, 60 paintings,
including works by Herring and Lowry, to a private collector in
Northamptonshire.
