In 1996 our department became concerned about the three examples of old
Chinese fireworks we have in our collections. At that time staff consulted
with the Explosives Technology Branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms. We told the ATF that the fireworks were in acid free boxes, in a
locked steel storage cabinet. Also, the building is completely smoke free,
and kept at approximately 50% humidity and 72 F. Finally, access to the
keys/locked cabinet is restricted to museum collections staff only. They
advised us they believed this was sufficiently safe storage for these
objects. We are storing several examples of old sulfur matches in a similar
fashion.

Hello,

What precautions -- if any -- should we take with
matchbooks, matchboxes, etc. in the collection?

Thanks,
Kim Kenney
